Terms of service

These Terms govern your use of karasira.org ("the memorial"). By visiting the site, submitting content, or making a donation, you accept these Terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the site.

1. What this site is

This is a community memorial for Aimable Karasira Uzaramba (1977 – 6 May 2026). It is run by independent volunteer maintainers. It is not run by, on behalf of, or in any commercial relationship with the Karasira family or any government.

The memorial exists to:

• Preserve the public record of his life, work and death
• Host community memories, photographs and audio testimonies
• Make his music, lectures and writing easier to find
• Tell the history he wrote about — Rwanda, unity, the survivor's voice

2. Donations

• Donations are processed by Stripe. We never see your card details.
• Donations are non-refundable as a default — they cover non-recoverable infrastructure costs already incurred.
• If you donated by mistake (wrong amount, duplicate, fraud) write to donations@karasira.org within 30 days and we will refund you in full.
• Recurring donations (monthly / yearly) can be cancelled at any time from your Stripe receipt email or by writing to us.
• We do not issue tax receipts unless we register the memorial as a non-profit in your jurisdiction (currently we have not).

3. Paid contribution tiers

The site offers three optional paid contribution tiers (€5, €20, €50). These are not donations — they pay for an enhanced page in the memorial. Specifically:

• €5 quote — a plain-text tribute in the memory book, ≤ 280 characters, kept indefinitely
• €20 quote with image — a longer tribute with one image, featured for 30 days
• €50 sliding banner — a discreet rotating banner in the partners strip for 30 days

Refund policy for paid contributions:

• If maintainers reject your submission for any reason, we refund 100% within 7 days
• If you change your mind before publication, we refund 100% within 7 days
• After publication, no refund — you can still request the content be removed (no money back)

Pricing may change over time. The price you saw and paid is the price you owe; future changes don't apply retroactively.

4. Free contributions: memories, photos, audio testimonies

The memory book, photo wall, and audio testimonies are free to contribute to. Audio testimonies require sign-in and email verification (see Privacy Policy).

5. What you may submit

You may submit content that is true, your own, and respectful. Specifically:

• Memories — your personal recollection of him or his work
• Quotes / lyrics — words he said or wrote, properly attributed
• Photographs — pictures you took or have permission to share
• Audio testimonies — your spoken words, in any language, ≤ 10 minutes

6. What you may NOT submit

The following will be removed without notice and may result in your IP being blocked:

• Hate speech, incitement to violence, threats, harassment
• Genocide denial, revisionism, or content that minimises the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi
• Defamation of any person, alive or dead, including officials
• Content you do not hold the rights to (copyright, image rights, audio rights)
• Sexually explicit material, content involving minors, NSFW imagery
• Spam, advertisements, scams, links to malware
• Personal data of third parties (phone numbers, addresses, IDs)
• False claims presented as facts about Karasira's life or death
• Content that violates Rwandan law, EU law, or any applicable jurisdiction

7. Moderation

All public submissions (memories, photos, audio, paid contributions, partner banners) are reviewed before they appear publicly. Maintainers have full discretion to:

• Approve, edit (for typos / formatting only — never for meaning), or reject any submission
• Remove approved content later if new information shows it violates these Terms
• Block IPs / accounts that repeatedly submit content in violation
• Add a "Pending review" badge on your submissions only visible to you

If your submission is rejected we will tell you why if you ask, and refund any payment.

8. Your rights over what you submit

You keep full ownership of everything you submit. By submitting, you grant the memorial a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual licence to host, display, archive, translate (with care), and distribute your content as part of the memorial.

You can request removal of your contribution at any time by writing to privacy@karasira.org. We process such requests within 30 days. After removal, your contribution may persist briefly in backups (up to 90 days) before being purged.

9. The Karasira family

The family did not commission this memorial. They have not authorised any fundraising on their behalf. We do not transmit any money or data to them. If a family member contacts us asking that specific content be removed, we will honour the request as a default — out of respect.

10. Acceptable use of the site itself

You agree not to:

• Scrape the site beyond reasonable rate (≤ 1 request/sec; we throttle abusive scrapers)
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to break authentication
• Use the donate or contribute flow to test stolen cards
• Submit automated content via scripts
• Probe for vulnerabilities outside our security disclosure programme (see § 13)

11. Intellectual property of the site itself

The design, code, and editorial layout are released under the MIT license for code (see GitHub) and CC BY-SA 4.0 for the editorial copy and curation. Aimable Karasira's name, likeness, and works belong to him and his family — we use them with the goal of preservation, not commerce, in the public interest. If a rightsholder objects to specific usage, we will discuss in good faith.

12. Disclaimers

The memorial is provided "as-is", on a volunteer basis. We do not guarantee:

• Continuous availability — we may take it down for maintenance
• The accuracy of community submissions — they are testimonies, not verified facts
• That every paraphrased quote of Karasira is verbatim — we cite sources where possible and welcome corrections

To the extent permitted by law, the maintainers exclude all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

13. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the maintainers and their volunteers are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the site. Our aggregate liability for any direct damages will not exceed €100 or the total amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, whichever is greater.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability for fraud, gross negligence, or any liability that cannot be limited by applicable law.

14. Security disclosure

If you find a security vulnerability please email security@karasira.org. Please do not exploit it, do not access data beyond the minimum to demonstrate the issue, and do not disclose it publicly until we have had reasonable time (≤ 90 days) to fix. We thank responsible reporters publicly (with their consent) on the site.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms when the site evolves. Material changes will be announced on the site for 30 days and emailed to anyone who has given us an email. Continued use after the change means acceptance.

16. Termination

We can suspend access for anyone who violates these Terms. You can stop using the site at any time and request deletion of your data (see Privacy Policy § 7).

17. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Rwanda for users in Rwanda, and the laws of Belgium for users in the EU. Disputes will go first to good-faith mediation; if mediation fails, to the competent courts of Kigali or Brussels respectively.
